I recently had the opportunity to write for the all-things-vintage Web site
Queens of Vintage, and my first article covers one of my favorite 1940s hairstyles--The Peek-a-boo 'Do, as I like to call it. It's inspired by Betty Grable's famous updo, and as I've received many questions about how to create such an updo, I've written a tutorial to show you how I do it.
Check it out
here--I hope you enjoy it!
if only I had long enough hair to do that.. lol
ReplyDeleteGreat tutorial.....I usually have my hair this way on a Sunday....
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments, Dizzy Dame and Gingeyginge!
ReplyDeleteI think I will try this tonight to practice. If it comes out nice I will post pictures. If not, I will keep practicing. Do you ever sleep with the hair and wear it two days in a row?
ReplyDeleteThanks doll,
The Glamorous Housewife
ps: thanks for posting the contest!
It takes a bit of practice to master, but it's actually not as hard as you might think :-)
ReplyDeleteI do sometimes sleep with it in this updo to get a second day's wear out of it--it usually works quite well. Also, when I roll my hair I leave the rolls as is and re-set the back at night--this saves some time in the morning :-)
Fantastic! I have been seeking the information on how to do this updo for a while and here it is! Thank yo so much, Amanda!
ReplyDeleteDo you sleep with a wet set of pincurls? I know many girls do sleep in them and I tried it and found it somewhat uncomfortable (slept restlessly). Do you have any ticks to make it easier to sleep in them? Or is it just a matter of getting used to it?
Thank you so much,
Maria
I can't wait to hear how your hair turns out, Maria!
ReplyDeleteI set my hair in perm rods or foam sticks (I've never mastered pin curls as these work so well for me.) Also, I don't ever set my hair when it's wet, as it would take forever to dry--I set it barely damp when it's freshly washed, or when I set it dry between shampoos, I pat it with water to dampen it slightly.
The perm rods/foam sticks aren't too uncomfortable to sleep in, but eventually you just get used to it :-)
Wonderful post Amanda, I'm going to wear my hair like this for work now!
ReplyDeleteI'll bet that would look lovely, MissMatilda! You ought to style it that way for a shoot sometime :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Amanda!
ReplyDeleteI actually got it cut today (layers at the ends and in the front) and the hairdresser even set it for me with a curling iron -- I was very pleased with the results. I am going to do it myself tomorrow with hot sticks. I should try the perm rods. Do you get them at Sally's?
Maria
Sounds lovely!
ReplyDeleteI did get the perm rods at Sally's--they are white (I think slightly larger than 1/2" in diameter, but I can double-check for you if you'd like.)
Such a cute style, thank you so much for the tutorial! I'm not too great at getting hairstyles to turn out yet, but I'm definitely going to give this one a try! I've always loved Betty Grable's hair in this picture!!!
ReplyDeleteOh, thank you, Amanda. If you are not going to go out of your way to check, then please do. Otherwise I don't want to impose.
ReplyDeleteMaria
Thank you, Lizzy! It takes a bit of practice, but it's worth it :-)
ReplyDeleteIt's not trouble at all, Maria! I just checked the package and they measure 3/8". Let me know how they work for you!
I double-checked on the Sally Beauty site and they are actually listed as 9/16"--here's they are (my package is pretty worn now lol):

Neat! My hair is much too short for such a style, but I occasionally do a late '30s version of it. Think either Joan Fontaine in "The Women" or a half up, half down tweaking of it.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds really pretty, Elsie!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, Amanda!
ReplyDeleteI was very excited to see this tutorial! I can't wait to give it a go. =D

COOL! Thanks so much for the tutorial!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this! I have wanted to know how to do this hairstyle for so long!
